For those of us who remember rallying on the BBC through the 1980s and 1990s, there is something rather fitting about the WRC returning to the Corporation. Rally Report first appeared on BBC2 in 1984 and for many years the RAC Rally became something of a fixture in the television schedules. William Woollard presented from rally headquarters, with Sue Baker, Barrie Gill and later Tony Mason out on the stages, and the coverage included everything from previews and live stages to regular reports as the rally made its way around the country.
Then, of course, came Colin McRae.
I was fortunate enough to experience those extraordinary years at close quarters with Prodrive and the Subaru World Rally Team, and it is difficult today to overstate the impact Colin had on the national awareness of rallying.
