M otorsport is exhilarating, demanding and can be, by its nature, risky. That is part of what makes it so compelling – but it is also why it is so important to know what protection is in place through Motorsport UK if something goes wrong. Whether you are competing, marshalling, officiating or taking part in another formal role, Motorsport UK-permitted events include valuable insurance protections, each one designed for a different purpose.
In reality, most members never need to make a claim. Incidents are relatively rare, and that is exactly how everyone wants it to stay. However, when an incident does happen, confusion about insurance can add stress at the worst possible moment – so understanding the broad shape of the cover in advance can give you greater confidence in what to do next.
Broadly speaking the insurance provided is linked to a Motorsport UK Permit. Club’ s, Organisers and Officials should consider what cover is available for activities taking place outside of a Motorsport UK Permit, such as private testing and practice days. The insurance provided by Motorsport UK can be broken down in three areas: and, for some events, Road Section Top-Up Motor Cover.
While they may sound similar, they provide cover for very different situations.
PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE For many participants, this insurance cover answers the big‘ what if?’ questions: What if someone is hurt? What if someone’ s property is damaged? What if I am accused of having caused it and a claim follows?
It is intended to protect you against legal liability if another person( a third party) brings a claim for injury

or property damage that may have arisen by your activity at the Permitted Event, and importantly, it also includes the legal defence of claims where appropriate.
This is the backbone of the insurance arrangement; the Public Liability cover is provided through a Motorsport UK Master Policy which is then in place for Permitted events. It can extend to a range of insured parties acting under the authority of Motorsport UK, including Licensed Competitors, Officials, Volunteers, Marshals, Clubs and Organisers – as well as certain others connected with the event.
Members participating at at overseas events, even if they are run by an FIA accredited ASN, are outside of Motorsport UK’ s jurisdiction and should check what applies under the relevant event and territory, if in doubt, contact Motorsport UK or Marsh in advance.
The crucial point is this: Public Liability cover is there to provide protection from litigation following allegations that your actions have resulted in causing injury to other people or damage to their property. It looks to defend you and provide cover for legal fees, expenses and potential compensation to the third party. It is not there to cover your own car, equipment or property.
• If an incident leads to an allegation that a third party has been injured or their property damaged, Public Liability may be the relevant protection.
• If you damage your own competition vehicle or equipment, that is a different issue and would usually require your own insurance policy such as separate on-track damage cover if you want that protection.
