What is your earliest memory of motorsport?
In 2004, when I was seven years old, I sat in the co-driver’ s seat next to Alister McRae in a Subaru Impreza while he was testing the car in preparation for Wales! There were no pace notes or talking on my part, I was just star struck and I was so low in the car, all I could see out of the window was the sky! He gave me a signed poster which included a picture of the Subaru he competed in on the WRC Rally Sweden earlier that year – and that turned out the be the same car in which I now regularly compete in the Welsh Championship.
What has been the highest high in your career to date?
I won the Welsh National Championship Challenge Award for co-drivers in 2024 and was third in class in both the Welsh and BTRDA Championships. That was all achieved in just over 12 months after competing on my first ever rally.
What has been the lowest low in your career so far?
There is always something that makes Rallying a challenge, from the limited opportunities for co-drivers when starting out to consecutive retirements when luck is against you. But if it was easy, the satisfaction of success would not be so great.
What has been the biggest and best opportunity you have had?
Competing on my first ever Rally, the Phil Price Memorial Woodpecker Rally, in 2023. It is my home event, with stages just a few miles from my house, and it is also run in memory of a very close family friend, without who I would not have become involved in the sport.
What are your aims and when do you want to get there?
I am entirely focused on developing my skills and knowledge as a co-driver through as many experiences as possible, methodically working my way up the ladder one step at a time with the aim of competing at the highest-level within the next six years.
If you could get career advice from one person in motorsport, who would it be?
As a member of the Academy, I am fortunate to have three of the very best co-drivers in our sport as mentors: Nicky Grist, Seb Marshall and Paul Spooner. They have vast experiences and knowledge of competing at the highest level and I can always count on their advice. I thoroughly enjoy listening to their stories from competing over the years.
What is the biggest thing you have learned from your time with the Academy so far?
It has given me confidence that I have the abilities and the passion to succeed as a co-driver. The Academy is directly helping me develop my overall knowledge and professionalism in the co-driver’ s seat, including fitness, preparation and professional practices. Our mentors share with us all they can to ensure that each of us achieves our potential.
How are you doing this year and what has been the biggest challenge?
The start of this season has been extremely difficult due to back-to-back mechanical retirements on the first two events. However, that has enabled me to spend time properly evaluating my performance on each event, focusing on the positives and expanding my knowledge in preparation for future rallies.
