Land Speed records are governed by the FIA and provide a proving ground for new ideas and ambitious engineering. JCB’ s Hydromax is firmly in that tradition, using the Bonneville Salt Flats to make a compelling case for hydrogen combustion.
With former RAF pilot and Land Speed record holder Andy Green at the controls, Hydromax recorded an average speed of 406.32mph, reaching 412mph on the faster of its two runs and becoming the fastest hydrogenpowered vehicle in the world. The numbers are extraordinary, but the engineering behind them is perhaps even more significant. It is powered by two JCB hydrogen combustion engines producing a combined 1,600bhp, with the technology rooted in the engines the company uses for its construction machinery.
There is also a strong motorsport connection. Prodrive, the British motorsport and advanced engineering company owned by Motorsport
UK Chair David Richards, being responsible for vehicle integration and trackside operations, helping prepare both car and crew for the unique challenges of a world Land Speed record campaign. Working alongside JCB and Ricardo, the company supported the development, testing and execution of the record attempt, drawing on all their experience operating at the highest levels of international motorsport. David adds another record to his roster.
