Mapping the future of UK Motorsport
As part of London Motor Week, Hugh Chambers, CEO of Motorsport UK, joined a special public forum being held at the Royal Automobile Club’ s Pall Mall clubhouse last month.
For decades, British drivers, constructors, and teams have dominated the global motorsport scene. Today, the sector supports more than 50,000 skilled jobs and generated a sales turnover of £ 16 billion in 2023, making a major contribution to the UK economy.
Chambers was accompanied by Peter Daly, Chairman of the British Racing and Sports Car Club( BRSCC), Clerk of the Course at the British Grand Prix, and Race Director of the British GT Championship, and Stuart Pringle, Managing Director of Silverstone Circuit, with F1 television presenter Lee McKenzie as host.
Chambers discussed some of the challenges facing motorsport,“ Environmental sustainability is an enormous challenge for motorsport, and we have made significant progress with innovative solutions. One important step is the Girls Karting Academy initiative that promotes indoor karting for girls aged eight and above, to try out motorsport in a safe and accessible environment.
“ Here in the UK our rich heritage, passionate community and great venues mean that the future looks strong, our Motorsport UK Academy has over 100 young drivers and rally co-drivers lining up to replace the roll call of British champions on the world stage. Our aim now is to inspire the next generation to give motorsport a go.”
