That car – well the shell, at least – is the same 1992-registered machine that will head to Pikes Peak, although it is now a very different beast. Over the last 12 years, the original 2-litre 86 bhp engine has been replaced by a 2.35-litre turbo unit producing closer to 860bhp and the car has been modified beyond recognition.
Bradley had no prior mechanical knowledge when he started out, yet he has achieved much of this transformation with the support of just a small team of friends; a growing list of sponsors who have been inspired to join his journey; and a patient family support him in his dream.
“ I was always interested in tuning cars, but I did not have the funds to do it, and definitely did not have the know-how, so I learned as I went,” he admits.“ When I first got the Legacy, I also bought a crashdamaged Subaru Impreza STi, because the two are identical in terms of mechanicals, engine position and suspension pick-ups, with the Legacy just 60mm longer.
