Florence began rallying at the age of 14, navigating for her father in the first Mini Challenge. She started driving in the J1000 championship and joined the Mini field at 17 years old. Having watched her father competing in Wales Rally GB, she wanted to experience a mammoth event and the R A C Rally was the perfect fit.
“ This was a huge event for me, having only had my licence for two years, and although I don’ t usually get nervous, as the event got closer, the weather conditions worried me. The forecast was for snow and ice, which I’ d never driven on before, and I knew how easily that could bring my event to an end.
“ We ended up running at the front, but it was incredibly challenging. The toughest moment was on the Sunday, when we got back from a big loop in Scotland and had to go back out and do it all again at night. Then, on the final 40-mile stage, the seeding was flipped so we had a long wait before going out and that also really built the nerves.
“ In the first mile, we caught the now well-known Skoda Octavia from the Czech Republic, and they followed us through the stage because their lights were so bad! The driver came up to us and used Google Translate to thank us for letting them follow us! That’ s what it’ s all about really; the camaraderie between the competitors was amazing.”
