TALENT SHOWCASE The British round of the WRC has long been an aspirational event for many British drivers and co-drivers, but it has also opened the doors for many to compete at the top level.
Cotton estimates over 40 percent of the Rally1 drivers and co-drivers in WRC were originally schooled in some way on the BRC, and he explains:“ Our championship has historically been one of the biggest feeders into world-level rallying. It’ s almost a natural progression.
“ People who contest the BRC always look to progress and go on to do bigger things, and when it was a qualifying round, the WRC was always a chance for us to show everybody who we are, what we are, what the championship is made of, and why it’ s so impressive.”
Cave was one driver to benefit from the showcase offered by a British round of the WRC when he finished as top privateer on Wales Rally GB in 2019. He recognises just how taking on the world’ s best‘ at home’ can get you in the spotlight.

Find out More event,” he says.“ It put my name out there and I was levelling myself against people like Kalle Rovanperä at Škoda, Takamoto Katsuta, Hayden Paddon and Mads Østberg.
“ Everybody was doing that rally and for us to get the result we did – finishing as the third WRC2 car out of 35 WRC2 entries – people notice that. They take that away and think‘ he’ s not just quick in the BRC’ and that’ s how I think other drivers should approach it as well.
“ The margins are tiny – but that’ s how you learn as a driver and from a young driver’ s perspective, someone like Max McRae, of course he is going to be aiming high next year, but he might get a bit of a shock at just how quick WRC2 really is.
“ It’ s all about being able to benchmark yourself against the top WRC2 guys. I was always told you’ re not expected to beat them and win, but if you can go there and show some pace against them, that’ s what matters.”
